Classics like <em>Forrest Gump<\/em>, <em>Good Will Hunting<\/em>, <em>Dances with Wolves<\/em> or <em>Home Alone<\/em> immediately come to mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019ll be blockbuster classics here, but also quieter indie movies. The \u201990s were my decade of exploration in pretty much every sense, and going to the movies was still a proper cultural and entertainment event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking of cinema: yes, back then going to the movies actually felt like a little occasion. With friends, or sometimes even on your own. And because it was a social thing, the movie was usually dissected over a beer afterwards before everybody headed home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What else were you supposed to do as a teenager in the Ore Mountains?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clubkino Siegmar, the open-air cinemas at Vox or AJZ, or the Luxor Cinestar \u2014 those were the kinds of places a village kid like me ended up going to. Just adding a little local flavour here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><br>The Game<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than coming up with yet another debatable, taste-driven and ultimately pointless ranking, I asked myself a few different questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Which movies still echo in my head today?<\/strong> I\u2019ve watched some of them a few more times over the years, but the strongest memory is usually still that very first viewing. And if a movie has stayed lodged in my brain all this time, it automatically has a decent shot at making the list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Why did they stick?<\/strong> This is about scenes, moments and whatever those films meant to me personally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How did I find them in the first place?<\/strong> Media hype? Recommendation? My own discovery? Pure accident?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Would I eventually annoy my daughters into watching them?<\/strong> That\u2019s actually the deciding question. Some things age badly. Others somehow remain timeless. <em>Fight Club<\/em>, for example, genuinely shocked me when I watched it again after 25 years \u2014 mostly because of how naive and almost staged its rebelliousness suddenly felt. Back then? I stood up in the cinema and applauded. The only one. Didn\u2019t care. I was completely blown away.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Out of Sight<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So those four questions produced the first five movies I want to put out there. Please forgive me if, say, <em>Titanic<\/em> isn\u2019t among them. No question: it\u2019s an absolute masterpiece, a cinematic battleship, overwhelming and emotionally flattening when it wants to be.<br>But for all its status as genuine cultural heritage, it simply hasn\u2019t echoed through my own life in quite the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So here it is: a completely personal list to argue with, roll your eyes at, rediscover, dismiss, remember \u2014 whatever works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><br>First Strike<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><br>1. L\u00e9olo<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story of a boy going through puberty in a poor Canadian neighbourhood in the 1950s, while fantasising that he is actually Italian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is fiction? What is psychosis? This really is lyricism captured on celluloid. A genuinely unusual piece of art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>How I found it: <\/em><\/strong>A recommendation from a good friend who had a huge influence on my cultural education. That alone makes it special to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Dad recommendation: <\/em><\/strong>Yes \u2014 but only once puberty is already well underway. Definitely not one for six-year-olds, and mentally it isn\u2019t exactly light entertainment either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>A bit of trivia: <\/em><\/strong>Writer and director Jean-Claude Lauzon died in a plane crash in 1997. The film draws strongly on R\u00e9jean Ducharme\u2019s novel <em>L\u2019Aval\u00e9e des aval\u00e9s<\/em>, which also plays a role within the story itself. Experiences and emotions from Lauzon\u2019s own life found their way into the film as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Highly metaphorical, wildly creative and packed with layers of meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why, to me, <em>L\u00e9olo<\/em> is basically <strong>\u201cpoetry in motion (picture)\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 cinematic poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><br>2. I don\u2019t think either of us really knew what we were walking into \u2014 other than the Coen brothers being a pretty reliable sign that it might be good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was basically: \u201cFancy going to the movies?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We laughed our asses off. That I remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether the night ended in a pub afterwards? No idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Dad recommendation: <\/em><\/strong>Definitely. It\u2019s a cult movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether my daughters will ever understand why the hell any of this is funny? Who knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the charm and flow really are timeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><br>3. Half my class was sitting in there, and clouds of cigarette smoke hung in the room, cutting through the projector beam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s how cinema is supposed to feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Great moment. Great movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Dad recommendation: <\/em><\/strong>Yes. I\u2019d genuinely love to see how my daughters react to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unless, of course, some real-life Skynet has completely ruined the dystopian charm by then and turned half the movie into a documentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they\u2019ll probably look at me and ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You guys saw all this coming and did nothing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe showing them this one isn\u2019t such a good idea after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><br>4. Say what again, I dare you, I double dare you motherfucker, say what one more goddamn time!&#8221;<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>After-effect: <\/strong><\/em>More than anything, it\u2019s the soundtrack, the coolness and that completely unique atmosphere that stayed with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s one of those movies I can still switch on today and immediately fall back into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>How I found it: <\/em><\/strong>I definitely noticed all the hype at the time \u2014 but I didn\u2019t actually watch the movie until quite a bit later, probably around 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So there\u2019s no legendary cinema story attached to this one. No special night. Nothing dramatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I simply caught up with it eventually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And immediately understood what everybody had been talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Dad recommendation: <\/em><\/strong>Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If only because it\u2019s such an important piece of \u201990s film and pop culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether my daughters will ever find it as cool as I do is another question entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><br>5. Call me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That still sends a shiver down my spine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this one I definitely remember discussing in a pub afterwards. My friend kept imitating the scene until it finally dragged me back out of whatever disturbed state the movie had left me in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>How I found it: <\/em><\/strong>Drove to the Luxor with a bunch of friends and simply picked it from the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were usually a few indie films hiding among all the blockbusters, so you could more or less just show up and take your chances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We came out mildly traumatised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Dad recommendation: <\/em><\/strong>Maybe this one is more along the lines of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLook at the kind of insane shit your dad used to watch.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mostly just to impress them a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>A bit of trivia: <\/em><\/strong><em>Lost Highway<\/em> became an important door-opener for Rammstein in the US.
